The pillar's robust Grecian-scrolled 'claw' terminating in lion-paws relates to that of an 1804 'Loo Table' pattern in Thomas Sheraton's Cabinet Encyclopaedia (plate 4 of Tables). A similar 'claw' foot breakfast-table was sold by the late Earl of Sefton, Croxteth Hall, Liverpool, Christie's house sale, 17-20 September 1973, lot 74.
