Lot Essay

This unusual Du Li Fu mark may be translated as 'For the Quarters of the Military Superintendent', which indicates that the present box was a private commission. It has been suggested by Geng Baocheng that this type of boxes was used for the storage of crickets, cf. Mingqing Ciqi Jianding, Forbidden City Publishing House, 1993, p. 142; for a line drawing of a fan-shaped box see, ibid., p. 146, fig. 264; and a blue and white Wanli-marked fan-shaped box, illustrated, p. 147, fig. 265.
