A LATE MING BLUE AND WHITE SQUARE BOX AND COVER
WANLI SIX-CHARACTER MARK AND OF THE PERIOD (1573-1619)

Well painted in cobalt of characteristic deep purplish-blue tone, on the flattened domed cover with sprays of peony and chrysanthemum growing from rockwork, the rounded sides of both box and cover with cartouches of the same flowers and stylised floral sprays on the canted corners, all raised on a foot of conforming shape, the rims bordered with classic scrolls (minor fritting to rims)
