The tapering shaft of the pen finely carved with a scholar holding a paint brush in his hand under a pine tree, his attendant sweeping clean a rock surface for his master to write calligraphy upon, with bands of lotus petals at the tip of the pen and key-fret around the top, the cylindrical cover carved with two further scholars and an attendant, all against a cell-pattern diaper ground, the top of the cover with a flower-head motif
