A RARE YELLOW JADE CUP
TANG DYNASTY OR EARLIER (618-907)

The shallow cup is raised on a short circular foot and carved with a rib encircling below the mouth rim, the integral handle of circular section with a lipped edge, the stone of yellow and ochre tones with areas of opaque cream inclusions, the mouth rim bound with a gold band

Lot Essay

Related Tang dynasty examples of these single-handled cups with various designs for the handle, are known. Cf. a white jade example with a foliate element above the ring handle in the Palace Museum, Beijing, illustrated in Zhongguo Yuqi Quanji, vol. 5, pl. 33; and a much more elaborate and larger vessel carved throughout with cloud-scrolls, illustrated in Jadeware (II) - The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum, Hong Kong, 1995, pl. 35. A Song dynasty brown jade cup with a very similar handle is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, illustrated by Geoffrey Wills, Jade of the East, New York, 1972, pl. 51.
