Lot Essay

This clock is related to an 18th century model with two putti supporting a sphere representing heaven (see Tardy, French Clocks the World Over, 1981, vol. II, p. 100).

In 1844 Guillaume Denière took over the Parisian business established by his father in 1804, producing a variety of high quality decorative bronzes. Under the Second Empire, Denière supplied important commissions to the Mobilier de la Couronne (mainly clocks for the Tuileries), to Kisselef, the Russian Ambassador, and to Said Pasha, the viceroy of Egypt. Tardy cites the firm as being active until 1890.

Another example of this model sold Sotheby's London, 1 March 1996, lot 44 (£11,500).
