Each with tapering volute-form backplate centred with a ram's mask, surmounted by a laurel-swagged urn-en-flambeau, issuing scrolled arms draped with oak-leaf swags, with berried finial, the reverse stamped with a 'C' within a lozenge for Caldwell, electrified

Lot Essay

The design for the present model applique, with its tête de bélier central mount, is attributed to the celebrated architect, designer and ornémaniste, Jean-Charles Delafosse (d. 1789). For a pair of appliques supplied to the Prince Condé by bronzier, Quentin-Claude Pitoin (d. 1777), now in the Louvre, see H. Ottomeyer and P. Pröschel et al, Vergoldete Bronzen, Munich, 1986, vol. I, p. 186, fig. 3.9.1.

Two unattributed 19th century pairs of this model applique sold in these rooms 29 October 2003, lots 178 and 178A ($21,510 and $20,315).
