The Wise and Foolish Virgins

After the signed and dated painting of 1700 by Schalcken in the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen, Munich, on display at Schloss Schleissheim, that was in the collection of the Bavarian Electors by 1716. A copy, with differences, is in the Musée de Blois, and, in addition, Hofstede de Groot (A Catalogue Raisonné, etc., V, London, 1913, p. 320, under no. 21) mentions a second version that was included in the sales of J.L. van Strantwijk (Amsterdam, 10 May 1780, lot 232) and of Maria Theresia Wittebol and De Labistraeten (Antwerp , 19 June 1804, lot 162), although there is no way of telling whether that work is in fact the present picture.
