lithotint, 1878, on cream wove paper, Spink's rare first state (of four), one of only approximately 12 impressions before the extensive scraping of the stone (the total edition was approximately 100 in the third and final states), with margins, the upper margin trimmed slightly unevenly at two places, pale mat and time staining, traces of surface soiling in the margins, small soft creases at the extreme lower margin corners, otherwise in good condition, framed

Lot Essay

This print is one of only approximately 12 known impressions of the first state pulled by hand before the extensive scraping of the stone to lighten the image. These impressions have a dark, crisp appearance and lack striations in the sky.
