Lot Essay

Over time, Manjit Bawa's style has emerged as a blend of traditional Basohli miniature painting with a more personal modern aesthetic. His forms appear suspended against flat planes of color. The central image relies on tonal contrasts and intriguing gestural details. The very precise areas of color and their subtle shades reflect his training in silkscreen printing.

"The eye determines all in Manjit Bawa's painting. The image fills the picture frame as sculpture confronts the viewer with its material reality. It energizes the space within which it is seen with a mode of stillness specific to Manjit's form-making manoeuvres." (K.B. Goel, 'Manjit Bawa', Center for Contemporary Art Annual, New Delhi, 1990-91.)
