Two more elaborate but very similar anchor shaped weights were sold in these Rooms, 10 October 2000, lot 318. The footnote to those discussed in greater detail the origin and possible use of these unusual objects, suggesting they were for tethering animals. Two further examples, very similar to the present example but slightly smaller, sold in these Rooms, 23 April 2002, lot 64 and 29 April 2003, lot 61. The first had an inscription that was read indicating that it was more probable that they were used for tethering the guy-ropes of tents on inhospitable ground. The present example has the same inscription as the last two most recently sold here, but the inscription is differently written, but written in a slightly different way enabling a different reading. In this case the interpretation would make sense if they are to be used for increasing the tension on a carpet loom.
