Dividing a surface up into rectilinear panels with the use of engraved paired lines seems to be a feature of a small group of vessels from Nishapur. A beaker discovered in the excavations there shows exactly this feature (Kröger, Jens: Nishapur Glass of the Early Islamic Period, New York, 1995, no.224, pp.171-2). The neck found on the present bottle also has a very close parallel from the excavations there (Kröger, op.cit., no.173, p.128). The present bottle has used techniques therefore whihc are well attested at Nishapur, but has conmbined them in a particularly attractive way. The craftsman who made it plays with the counterpoint between the straight even lines which form the lattice and the curving bevelled lines with decorate the interior of each panel.
