Lot Essay

Tiles of this design are to be found in the Süleymaniye Mosque of 1550-1557 and in the tomb of Sultan Selim II (1566-1574) in Istanbul. One example is in the Sadberk Hanim Museum (Altun, Ara; Carswell, John and Öney, Gönül: Turkish Tiles and Ceramics, Istanbul, 1991, no.I57, p.39). Two further examples have been sold in these Rooms, 10 October 2000, lot 206, and 1 May 2001, lot 364. Another example from the Heidi Vollmoeller collection, with lighter outlining, is found as lot 340 in this sale.
