A QAJAR CUERDA SECA POTTERY TILE ARCHWAY
IRAN, 19TH CENTURY
Comprising forty-four tiles and part tiles together forming joined spandrels, the cobalt-blue ground with bold scrolling yellow arabesques entwined with spiralling floral tendrils, each spandrel containing a cartouche inscribed in nasta'liq, in yellow border of meandering flowering vine between plain stripes, occasional damages and repairs, mounted on board in three sections

Lot Essay

The inscription, referring to the Imam Husayn, reads Ya Abu 'Abdullah!".

A similar rectangular panel with inscription cartouche among arabesques was sold in these Rooms 29 April 2003, lot 191.
