CENTRAL IRAN, EARLY 14TH CENTURY
Divided into two registers, the larger lower one with spiralling tendrils, perching birds and foxes around a raised blue thuluth inscription, the upper register with moulded interlaced arabesques, lower border of stylised kufic, one repaired break, very slight repainting

Lot Essay

The Persian inscription can possibly be translated: " ... On the way, that will become ... "

This tile comes from "Frieze 3" defined by Dr Melikian Chirvani (Melikian-Chirvani, A.S.: Les frises du shah name dans l'architecture iranienne sous les Ilkhan, Paris, 1996, pp.39-43, figs.27-30). For a slightly smaller very similar tile please see lot 1269.
