Lot Essay

Bowls of similar design with cross-hatching and palmettes were found among those excavated during the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Iranian Expedition of 1935-1940, (Wilkinson, Charles: Nishapur Pottery of the Early Islamic Period, New York, figs.13-67b, pp.54-89). Although palmettes are included within the other designs, they are all inverted and not placed horizontally as here.
