Lot Essay

Numerous design examples exist of the interplay of palmettes and arabesques on tiles, dating back to the beginning of the century as shown by the preceding lot. The present tile has the drawing and colour used in the middle of the 16th century. Whether it was made at Iznik, at Jerusalem, or at Damascus however is more difficult to say.
