Lot Essay

An identical tile is in the Kestner Museum, Hannover (Niewöhner, Elke: Islamische Kunst, Kestner-Museum Hannover, Hannover, 1991, no.45, p.31 and front cover illustration), while another, considerably more damaged, is in the Hetjens Museum, Düsseldorf (Islamische Keramik, exhibition catalogue, Düsseldorf, 1973, no.350(pt.), p.239). A number of others of this design are known, but with the details worked with considerably less finesse than is found here.
