The beige field with bold palmettes issuing scrolling flowering vine around a shaded blue central cusped medallion with pendants of similar design enclosing a rosette centrepiece, the raspberry-red spandrels similar, in a medium blue border of palmettes and angular vine meander, signature cartouche at one end, between mustard-yellow and raspberry- red floral meander, ribbon and zigzag stripes, plain outer blue stripe, slight wear

Lot Essay

The inscriptions read:
'amal-e 'Ustad Abu'l-Qasem Kirmani (made by the master Abu'l-Qasem Kirmani) Farmayesh-e .... Salmasi (ordered by ...... Salmasi).

A smaller silk rug of very similar design was sold in these Rooms 14 October 1999, lot 75. The note to that lot mentions further examples in his better known pictorial style.
