Lot Essay

Both fragments are from the relatively small 'spiralling tendril and palmette' group of carpets which are most strongly attributed to Isfahan. The colouring, drawing and silk warped structure of the present lots are typical of the earliest examples. Two complete carpets from this group were sold in these Rooms 17 October 1996, lot 404 and 24 April 1997, lot 530.
