Lot Essay

Camille Souter was born in Northampton in 1929. She was educated in Ireland and then trained to be a nurse at Guys Hospital in London. It was a bout of tuberculosis at this time which led to her being called Camille. She gave up nursing for painting and spends much of her time on Achill Island.

The first of her series paintings date from the early 1960s, each series being associated with a particular colour; the dead shark series of 1965 featuring the silvery greys of the fish skin captured with very fluid brushstrokes.
