Lot Essay
The Carver family of landscape painters came from Waterford. Richard Carver (d.1754), who was the father of Robert Carver (for whom see the following lot) practised in Dublin as a landscape painter but also painted an altarpiece for his native town. This landscape with its elegantly dressed figures in the foreground is characteristic of his output and can be compared to the signed landscape by him in the Ulster Museum which is thought to date to the 1740s (for which see A. Crookshank and the Knight of Glin, The Painters of Ireland, p.112, pl. 96).
