Modelled as a Blackamoor with crown and kilt of tobacco leaves, flanking a barrel inscribed GENUINE TOBACCO possibly a later replacement or addition, later re-decorated

Lot Essay

COMPARATIVE LITERATURE:
Edward Pinto, Treen and other Wooden Bygones, Bell & Hyman,1969.
The Blackamoor was used as a symbol of the tobacco trade from the 17th century. Pinto has illustrated a comparable tobacconists' counter display (see fig. 436). The figure is also carved with a giltwood tobacco leaf crown and 'kilt', and dated to 17th century.
