Evita opened in London on 21st June, 1978 and ran for eight years totalling 1,567 performances. It won several prestigious awards including two Laurence Olivier awards for Musical of the Year and Best Performance In A Musical (awarded to Elaine Paige) in 1978, and it swept the board in 1980 winning seven Tony Awards, the New York Drama Critics award for Best Musical and nine L.A. Drama Critics Circle awards.
