In His Own Write was adapted for the stage by Victor Spinetti after an American, Adrienne Kennedy, suggested the idea. Apparently, when Spinetti first mentioned the stage production to Lennon, he burst out laughing and exclaimed They must be f**king mad!. However, Lennon granted Spinetti the theatrical rights and work on the adaptation went ahead. The opening night at the National Theatre was on 18th June, 1968 and was to be John and Yoko's second public outing as a couple - this caused a huge stir amongst press photographers and reporters who were waiting outside the National Theatre for their arrival and the next day's newspapers carried a photograph of John and Yoko holding hands in public for the first time.

The inscription in this lot, the script and programme was obtained by a member of the cast in the play.
