Lot Essay

Lennon is believed to have executed this drawing whilst under the influence of L.S.D. The style of this sketch is comparable to another pyschedelic drawing by Lennon, executed in similar circumstances, sold through these rooms as part of The Cynthia Lennon Collection on August 29th, 1991, lot 613.

Lennon talked in some detail about L.S.D. during the famous interview with Rolling Stone editior Jann Wenner in 1970. George Harrison and Lennon were famously introduced to L.S.D. by their dentist who gave it to them at a dinner party. According to Lennon, after that first night on L.S.D., ...it was just terrifying. But it was fantastic. I did some drawings at the time - I've got them somewhere - of four faces and "we all agree with you", things like that. I gave them to Ringo, I've lost the originals. I did a lot of drawing that night... Lennon and Harrison both indulged in L.S.D. on a number of occasions and Lennon recalled ...It went on for years. I must have had a thousand trips... Lennon's experiences whilst on L.S.D. influenced many of his lyrics around that time, most famously She Said, She Said, Lennon recalled ...Peter Fonda came...and he kept on saying ... "I know what it's like to be dead." We said "What?" ... But he kept going on about it. That's how I wrote "She Said She Said, I know what it's like to be dead..."
