In many of his celebrity portraits, Andy Warhol combines glamour with political edge. Warhol's two most famous celebrity subjects, Marilyn Monroe and Jacqueline Kennedy, are as much a part of his Death and Disaster Series as they are portraiture. The present subject, Russell Means, is best known for his movie career and his role as the stoic father chief in the motion picture "Last of the Mohicans." He has spent most of his life however as a gutsy and controversial political activist and tribal leader and is an icon of strength and defiance in Native American culture. He suited Warhol as a subject on many levels: as a media star, a controversial political figure, and as a symbol of America.
