Lot Essay

The Gothic arcading and cluster columns of these chairs evolved from the George III 'Gothick' fashion, such as Thomas Chippendale illustrated in The Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director, 1762 (pl XVII). In 1784 the pattern provided the inspiration for chairs executed by the firm of Gillow of London and Lancaster (See L Bonyton Gillow Furniture Designs 1760-1800, 1995, Fig 257) and also for others executed in 1872 (see S Stuart 'Three Generations of Gothic Chairs by Gillows', Furniture History, 1996, p. 39, Fig 6 and p. 41 Fig II). An armchair, of this pattern was offered by Christie's New York, 29 April 1992, lot 143
