Lot Essay

"Tartini, the famous violinist (1698-1770) is said to have dreamt that Satan borrowed his violin and played him an air of marvellous and weird beauty. The musician fashioned the remembrance of this dream-music into his 'Trillo del Diavolo', known to the English as 'The Devil's Sonata'" (The Maas Gallery, London)
