Cal. 19", with nickel-finished fully jewelled two-train lever movement, bimetallic compensation balance, minute repeating and en passant striking with two polished steel hammers onto two steel gongs, gold cuvette, the gilt dial with blue enamelled Roman numerals, blued steel spade hands, blue enamel sector decorated centre, subsidiary seconds, in plain circular case with inlaid polychrome enamelled coat of arms to both sides, the front with a shield-shaped cartouche with two standing deer on blue background, surrounded by a red frame with gold cross marks and surmounted by a grey helmet, the reverse similarly decorated and depicting one standing and one grazing doe on green background above the motto Ex Antiquis (from the Elders), two levers for Sonnerie/Silence and Grande Sonnerie/Petite Sonnerie underneath the bezel, repeating slide in the band, tandem winding through the crown, case, cuvette and movement signed and numbered

Accompanied by Patek Philippe Extract from the Archives confirming production of the movement in 1897. The gold case with enamelled coat of arms and the gold dial with blue enamelled Roman numerals and blue enamelled pattern in the centre were added prior it its sale on 17 November 1905.

Clock watches by Patek Philippe are extremely rare. The present watch is particularly unusual as Patek Philippe is known to have reserved the "Grande and Petite Sonnerie" mechanism exclusively for their ultra complicated timepieces. To the best of our knowledge, less than 10 examples of grande and petite sonnerie clock watches with no further complications are known to this day.

An additional and attractive feature of this watch is certainly its provenance. The coat of arms are those of the Cervantes family and it appears that it was in the collection of a direct descendant of Miguel de Cervantes (1547-1616), Spanish novelist, playwright, and poet, the creator of Don Quixote, the most famous figure in Spanish literature.
