Lot Essay

The present lot is distinguished by its original star dial, which has taken on a warm patina over time, and the outstanding overall condition of the watch.

This model, reference 6062, was the first Rolex wristwatch to integrate day, date, month and phases of the moon. It was produced in a small series in the 1950's and examples in pink gold and with the star-shaped numerals on the dial are particularly rare.

Rolex has offered only two different models of moonphase wristwatches, references 8171 and 6062. Both models are automatic, however reference 8171 has a snap on back, while reference 6062, the Oyster version, has a water-resistant-type screw back.

The reference 6062 with star dial is illustrated in Rolex Wristwatches by J.M. Dowling & J.P. Hess, p. 204.

For a yellow gold example of the reference 6062 with star dial see lot 302 in this sale.
