With finely engraved gilt-finished jewelled lever movement, the three armed one minute tourbillon carriage with bimetallic compensation balance, spiral spring with overcoil and regulator, the fully engraved scroll and foliage decorated bridge forming the initials EG for Ernest Guinand, glazed dust cover, the silver engine-turned dial with engraved floral decoration in high relief, applied gold Roman numerals, floral decorated centre and border, pierced gold hands, subsidiary seconds, in circular case with finely engraved foliage and scroll decoration, similarly decorated pendant and bow, the front centred by a blank shield-shaped cartouche, case stamped WR and with Chester date letter for 1858, numbered underneath the dial

Lot Essay

Ernest Guinand (1807-1879) was a renowned watchmaker who specialised in the production of tourbillon watches, especially for Girard-Perregaux but also other manufacturers.

Many of his tourbillon chronometers were tested at the Neuchâtel Observatory and two of them won the second and third price in the 1879 contest in Category C for pocket chronometer featuring bascule escapements.
