Lot Essay

Here again Girault de Prangey turns his attention towards a simple vernacular building on a village street. The two-storey structure stands in the centre of the frame, tilting somewhat with all verticals at different angles. The roof seems to weigh heavily on the spindly timbers of the balcony on the first floor, but it still provides shade and shelter. The whole thing challenges the photographer - if one wall appears straight when viewed through the ground glass another will be more squint, so a compromise has to be reached. Even the large tree has a bent trunk that only adds to the sense that everything is less strong and upright than it might once have been. Solarisation affects the leaves of the tree and helps the sky to take on a very dark, somewhat threatening tone, against which the building seems very light, almost as though the image were a negative.
