Lot Essay
A detail of the curve of one of the semi-circular recesses or exedra breaking the long walls of the main court of the enormous Temple of Jupiter. This study at the upper level clearly shows the repeat pattern of unfluted pilasters with acanthus leaf Corinthian capitals between blind niches with triangular pediments. An unusually complete section of the entablature is displayed above.
The decoration is remarkably intact throughout, especially when compared with a similar section of wall featured in the daguerreotype in the following lot.
