In Baalbek the artist made a more thorough documentation of the site than in many of the other locations he visited and as usual he was very specific about most of the subjects photographed. His description here is one of those - no doubt accurate, but very dry. The image is small, but it is rich and provocative, offering much more than the title suggests. It could easily fit almost anywhere in this catalogue. If we disregard the plane that stretches toward the distant mountains we see the vast stones that recall the fall of an empire, and a solitary column, at the same time attached and detached. This is a grand view in miniature.

There are many views from the Temple of Bacchus in the archive (see also lot 47, 50, 51 and 68). Each is different.
