The original mosque of Amr, built in the middle of the 7th century was a simple building with bare walls, little decoration and no niche or minaret. It was expanded about fifty years later and one or more minarets added, thought to have been the first purpose-built examples in Islamic architecture. The one shown here was no doubt rebuilt at a later date, but reflects that simplicity. The clarity of the daguerreotype accentuates the less than perfect state of the tower, with its peeling stucco and bare patches of brickwork.

There is another panorama in the archive, horizontal in format, which shows the ruined west wall of the mosque and the lower part only of this minaret.
