oval, 3 in. (76 mm.) high, gold frame with bright-cut border, the reverse with gold initials HR on plaited hair within central panel, the reverse of the hair panel inscribed 'Charles Cuthbert. Madras. 15 Fy 1794'

Lot Essay

Harriet Emma Burnaby, daughter of Admiral Sir William Burnaby, Bt., married John Richardson (see preceding lot). Her sister, Georgiana Grace, later Mrs Chamier was painted by John Smart in India in 1786, see following lot. Miniatures of their sister Charlotte and her husband, Josias Dupre Porcher, signed and dated 1787 by John Smart were sold at Christie's, London, 14 February 1945, lot 79, later sold Sotheby's, London, 15 June 1950, lot 17. Another miniature of Charlotte Porcher, signed and dated 1788 I, was sold Sotheby's, London, 3 November 1958, lot 69 and again Sotheby's, London, 19 November 1984, lot 512.
