probably Geneva, circa 1840, maker's mark 'CM', struck with an 18-carat gold mark and another indistinct mark
Rectangular box with rounded corners, the cover centred by a scrolling reserve enamelled en plein with a miniature depicting a battle of the Crusades, with a heavily armoured knight striking at a mounted Saracen, within a border painted with scrolls and trailing foliage in blue, white and black taille d'épargne enamel on a frosted ground, surrounded by a pattern of blue enamelled lozenges on a polished gold ground, the sides and base similarly engine-turned and enamelled with foliate scrolls
