A LOUIS XV JEWELLED AND VARNISHED GOLD CARNET-DE-BAL SET WITH A MINIATURE
by Nicolas-Antoine Vallière (fl. 1766-1792), marked, Paris, 1768/1769, with the charge and discharge marks of Julien Alaterre 1768-1769
Rectangular etui-à-tablettes with rounded corners, the engine-turned scalloped guilloché panels on lid and base varnished in translucent blue to simulate enamelling, within pierced foliate gold borders, the rounded sides with reeded and pierced gold mounts featuring lozenges alternating with quatrefoils, the obverse of the cover applied with silver-mounted rose-cut diamond inscription Souvenir, the reverse of the lid applied with pierced trophies of love chased in pink gold and set with rose-cut diamonds, the obverse of the base centred with an oval glazed miniature painted with a Rococo lady in low cut white dress and turquoise-blue cloak, pearls in her upswept powdered hair, within an old-mine cut diamond border surrounded by a gold border, the reverse with identically gold-bordered glazed medallion with trophies of love drawn in sepia on vellum and inscribed 'Je m'attache a qui le meritte La fidelite vous unis', rose-cut diamond set pushpiece; gold-rivetted six-leaved tablets and gold-capped pencil inside
