Rectangular polished gold box with rounded corners, the upper right-hand corner of the hinged cover applied with the Russian double-eagle centred by an old-mine cut diamond, the gold pushpiece set with a sapphire cabochon

Lot Essay

L. Bäcksbacka (St. Petersburgs Juvelerare, Guld- och Silversmeder 1714-1870, Helsinki, 1951, p. 72) notes that Gabriel Niukkanen specialised in small silverworks and in cigarette cases. In 1898, he had a workshop at Kasanskaja 39. A. von Solodkoff (Russian Gold and Silverwork 17th -19th Century, Fribourg/New York, 1981, p. 192) lists him as Gabriel Ninkkanen among the workmasters for Fabergé.
