Inlaid overall in contre partie with foliate arabesques and lambrequins, the circular beaded, glazed bevel enclosing an engraved ormolu and enamel dial with Roman chapters, the movement with five vase-shaped pillars, twin barrels, the going train with later anchor escapement, calibrated countwheel strike on a bell, the strike train with foliate-pierced steel gates, the shaped case with arched pediment surmounted by a laurel-swagged orb framed within a scroll cartouche, the body mounted with acanthus, the tapering waist with gadrooned collar, the backplate signed to the reverse Martinot aux Galleries and with restorer's inscription to rear door, lacking feet, cresting probably replaced, losses to decoration, with pendulum

Lot Essay

Claude Martinot, Horloger du roi from 1718-1742.

The enriched scrolls of this clock are closely related to a design by Daniel Marot, which is illustrated in Das Ornamentwerk des Daniel Marot, Berlin, 1892, p. 178. A similar clock with contre-partie marquetry is illustrated in Tardy, La Pendule Française, Paris, 1967 1969, p. 105, while a further example was sold from the collection of Mrs. James Hasson, Christie's, London, 3 December 1981, lot 25, and another in première partie with identical orb mount was sold anonymously, Christie's, London, 2 December 1997, lot 27.
