The light burgundy field with a ton-sur-ton design of a scroll motif within a lush border of rose, peony, and digitalis blossoms entwined with squashes, grapes and pomegranates with animal trophies in each corner

Lot Essay

A Savonnerie carpet was in the 1844 Exposition Française des Produits de l'Industrie and displays a similar exuberant treatment of lush foliage, flowers and fruit (please see Floret, E., Great Carpets of the World, Paris, 1996, plate 253).
