Lot Essay

The late Renzo Mongiardino was one of the most dramatic and theatrical designers of the 20th century, often drawing his inspiration from the Antique, Renaissance and Baroque. These obelisks typify the bold style of Mongiardino, and two other pairs of similar obelisks are known, one in the Palazzo Quirinale, Rome, the other is illustrated in F. Cattaneo, Roomscapes, The Decorative Architecture of Renzo Mongiardino, New York, 1993, p.81.

A pair of the same model was sold, Christie's, New York, 22 May 2002, lot 363.
