As a young artist with a strong romantic nature, Seago sought out new experiences for his subject matter. As a nineteen-year-old he travelled with a circus, enjoying the open air, free life and colourful inspiration of the circus folk with their tents and caravans. One can see the excitement of Derby Day providing him with the same range of ideas, the combination of the horses and crowds creating the vibrant atmosphere he loved so much.
The present owner's parents were great friends of the artist. His father often painted with Seago, the two sitting side by side on their painting expeditions throughout the 1940s and 50s.
