Although Jerry is not mentioned in Munnings's autobiography, it is likely that this was an early portrait probably done for a friend. Early in his career Munnings would undertake a few horse portraits for local friends little knowing that later on his large society equine portraits would become a major component of his oeuvre. In An Artist's Life he remembered, 'I painted portraits of horses for people in the neighbourhood for ten pounds each.' (A.J. Munnings, ibid, Bungay, 1950, p. 202).

Although from his memoirs it appears he was based primarily in Cornwall in 1914, he also made trips to Norfolk and to Hampshire and as such, although it was clearly painted during the summer months, it is difficult to ascertain where Jerry was painted.

This work will be included in Lorian Peralta-Ramos's forthcoming catalogue raisonné of the works of Sir Alfred Munnings.
