Lot Essay

The subject of a lost deer with a golden eagle aggressively protecting its prize was a favourite subject of Thorburn's and one he usually executed on a large scale. He exhibited watercolours of this subject at the Royal Academy in 1894, 1898 and 1899.

A watercolour entitled The Lost Hind was sold Christie's, Edinburgh, 30 October 2003, lot 50, £28,000.
