The shepherd modelled standing wearing a black wide-brimmed hat, pink jacket, laced waistcoat, striped breeches, leaning on a tree-stump feeding a pigeon that has a letter pinned to its breast, a sheep at his feet, on a circular grassy base moulded with a gilt border of stylised serpents; his companion similarly modelled wearing a green and yellow wide-brimmed hat, lace bodice, pink apron and striped skirt, balancing a bird cage on her shoulder, with a sheep lying at her feet, on a similarly modelled grassy base
