Lot Essay

The racehorse depicted here is more than likely the 'Kettledrum' owned by Colonel Townley who won the Derby in 1861, beating the favourite, Mr Merry, by a length. In the same year he was entered for the St. Leger, which he lost by a head, and the Doncaster Cup, which he dead-heated. Unfortunately having run too many important races in a single year, he never ran again.
