Lot Essay

Lord Acton
(1834-1902)
John Emerich Edward Acton was a historian, political theorist and author of the unforgettable admonition "Power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Great men are almost always bad men, even when they exercise influence and not authority."

"He knew personally most of the distinguished historians and philosophers of Europe and America...At table with his family he chatted in English with his children, in German with his wife, in French with his sister-in-law and in Italian with his mother-in-law." -Gertrude Himmelfarb, author Lord Acton, Chicago, 1960.
