AN ETRUSCAN BRONZE MIRROR
CIRCA 4TH CENTURY B.C.
Cast with a concave-sided flange flaring at the bottom, the ornate handle with acanthus formations merging with the disk extension, the terminal in the form of an equine head, the obverse with a dentate edge, the reverse with a raised plain border, the interior engraved with an inner garland of spiky leaves enclosing the so-called sacra conversazione among four figures, with the Dioskouroi, the twins Castor and Pollux, seated on the right and left above their circular shields rendered in profile, both nude but for Phrygian caps and boots, the figure on the right also adorned with a mantle and baldric, an amphora at his feet, and two standing female figures between them, Minerva at the left facing left, draped and identifiable by her helmet and scaley aegis, Helen or Turan-Aphrodite to the right, depicted nude with her head inclined to the right, her long curly hair framing her face, wearing boots and a mantle over her shoulders and gathering between her legs, a fine blue-green patina throughout
